CROCKER The Legend Resurrected

In the last post, you may have read about the costliest bike ever sold in U.K and of course it was no surprise that it was either going to a Vincent or a Borough Superior. Now what bike would come to your mind if I tell you in the U.S, there is also a legendary 70 years old bike which sold at a stunning price of $300,000? Okay, it was not so close to the Vincent price of $350,000, but take a guess what bike that may be? No, it aint a HD, neither an Indian nor an American Ironhorse! Umm... you really cant recall any other American company that old, right? Now what if I were to tell you that a HD or an Indian could never ever match the performance of this stunner! More confusion... well, the brand of the bike is CROCKER.
The Crocker is dead, Long Live the Crocker... because the Crocker V-Twin is coming back... at an unaffordable price of $65,000 per bike and only 100 are to be built. Thats quite a number since only 61 Crocker V-Twins were ever built! (or probably 68 according to some reports)
Now what is the CROCKER? Crocker motorcycles came into existence in 1932, which were single cylinder speedways, but these were custom built. In 1936, the first production Crockers were built, which were V-Twins. The factory was in Los Angeles and it was there only for a mere 10 years, that is by 1942, production stopped when the 61st (or 68th) Crocker roll out of the factory. The man in charge, Mr. Albert Crocker started with only special orders with customized capacity as well with some engines going up to 100 cubic inches. The production Crockers although had overhead valves with a particluar thing about the engine.
They had hemisperical heads with exposed valve springs, while later models had a flat, squish-type combustion chamber with enclosed valve springs. All came with a three- gear and were magneto-fired. There were two different V-twins models as per the machine is concerned, a Big Tank model and a Small Tank model. The small tank model was supposed to be very sporty as it had a upright fork angle that shortened the wheelbase and quickened the steering. No HD or Indian during those days could match a Crocker. But now, it is back. In 1999 a new corporation was formed to manufacture replica parts and now the company has started taking orders to produce complete Crockers in kit form, following the original specifications, but of course with engine modifications to current standards. Back to history, ALbert Crocker made 30 odd custom speedway motorcycles. When he started production of the V-Twins, the first V-had a 61 cubic inches (1,000 cc) hemisperical head producing 55-60hp in 1930s where as at the same time the Indian and HD were in the 38-40 bhprange. Such was its power. The largest production motorcycle title was held by a Crocker displacing more than 1500cc for over 50 years till 1998 when Yamaha launched the 1600cc XV1600A, a.k.a the Yamaha Roadster. 30 odd single cylinders and 6o odd V-Twins, thats just 100 were ever produced. But just for the record, some say theres hould be around 200 of total Crockers produced - about 40-50 speedway, 100+ V-Twins and 40-50 "Scootabout". Scootabout were the worlds first Motor-Scooters. But what the heck, why go into figures?
So what bought the downfall if they were so powerful way back then? The same old World War II, what else? With WWII on, Indian and Harley got government contracts to produce motorcycles, while Mr. Crocker got the more lucrative contract of making aircraft parts and that was it. Being a businessman first, in 1942 Crocker Motorcycle became Crocker Manufacturing. If you look at the pictures, you can also see the quality of work done on these beauties. And it is because that these Crockers are so rare, they command a very hefty price at auctions if they do auction it at the first place. They sell for anything above $200,000 and the highest known auction of a Crocker is a Jack Lilly Crocker bought at $300,500. Now whats a Jack Lilly Crocker? More on that later.
Now coming back to the present, the company I mentioned who took up manufacturing spares were actually formed by a group of Crocker enthusiasts who have tried to keep this U.S first Superbike in modern limelight. Established in 1997 by Crocker enthusiasts Markus Karalash and Michael Schacht, the new Crocker Motorcycle Company is located in Toronto, Ontario Canada (thats what I read somewhere, but the official website still list it as Los Angeles) they formed the "Crocker Motorcycle Company". Now there were not many Crockers alive, so who would really buy the spares except for the few collectors? So in 1999, it was officially decided to incorporate Crocker Motorcycle Company and start manufacturing the complete motorcycle. By 2002, trademarks were registered world wide and plans have been made to produce both small and big tank models. But the peculiar thing is that the parts made are of the exact same pattern and mould that Albert Crocker made 70 years ago. All they do is use ultra modern machines and technologies.
Crockers casting patterns are made by old world craftsmenship which means it would take quite a time to make them. But that means it would be the exact replicas of the originals. And in all these, the company has constantly sought help from restorers and owners who were there when Crocker motorcyles were being produced. The New Crocker Motorcycle Company has officially mentioned that it is not only the V-Twins that they are going to make, but also the Speedways and Scootabouts. The first models should roll out by December this year and as such they are taking orders from customers.
There are so many interesting stories about the Crocker. One story is that Al Crocker declared that if any HD can beat his made Crockers, he would refund all the money. Another story goes that HD was so embrassed with losing over and over, that they had planned mass protest against Crocker. All these stories just cant be put on a simple blog like this. Read this link which I am sure you will rally enjoy, The Legend That Could Have Been at Star Riders. Do you remember that I wrote about a particular gentleman, Jack Rilley Well it was this mans Crocker which was auctioned for $300,000. Why? Jack Rilley has a lot of interesting history more so when you know that he was one guy who had got his V-Twin directly from Al Crockers factory in 1939. Click on the links to read the interesting story of Jack Lilly and what is the Boozefighter Motorcycle Club?
Now if you are thinking was it even actually faster than a Superior SS100 or a Vincent Series A. Well, the answer is Yes at least during its period of 1932 to 1942 because it could touch a peak of 185 kmph! Now again back to the future, what you see below is the C4 Crocker made by the New Crocker Motorcycle Company. Dont believe me, click on the link and it will take you to the official picture link.

In the News Speed Shop Viper V10 Kalex V Quad

So much has been happening in the motorcycle world recently that it is difficult to keep pace with the new things. Just wanted to put some new things that got attention of the world in the past one and half weeks. I am sure you must have caught the info and news, but in case you havent, links are provided of the original source for full stories.
After the recent AMD mind blowing beauties, here is another one which should have easily gone to the AMD. Its so beautiful, it is almost unreal and of course credit goes to photgrapher Jim Gianatsis of Fast Dates for depicting the beautiful handcrafted bike in such fine visual delight. OH! the bike... Yes, this is #6 (thats the name of the bike) from Seattle-based Chris Flechtner. And his approach got a big tick from the judges at last month’s Calendar Bike Building Championship in Long Beach as it walked off with the Pro Builder trophy. The bike was three years in the making at Speed Shop Design, and uses many hand-crafted parts. Sitting in the custom frame is a 1978 Sportster motor—a 38mm Mikuni VM carb supplies the gas, and air arrives through a modified horn scoop from a 1936 Ford. The front suspension, an 18” internal springer, is a Flechtner one-off. Chris Flechtner is a builder, has been for quite some time, starting out with RC model cars, then hand built bicycle frames and then a custom from a Honda CB350. The tank is a heavily modified Yamaha RD200 unit. He kept building while earning his MFA in design and metal arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Then he apprenticed under one of Japan’s most accomplished sword polishers and restorers, Tatsuhiko Konno, where he is still involved in the restoration of priceless samurai swords and armor. It’s not the usual path to custom motorcycle building but it lays a great foundation. Visit SPEED SHOP DESIGN although currently, it is inactive but has a flickr link for more photos. But you can also vist Chris Blog.

Brit bike builder Allen Millyard has launched his biggest and best machine yet - a 500bhp monster powered by a V10 Dodge Viper supercar engine. This is a street-legal motorcycle that’s powered by an 8,400cc motor. The V10 really needs no special tuning to get that output so all you have to do is fit the engine into a frame, Millyard has built a lot of interesting customs over the years, like a V12 Kawasaki from two 1300cc straight sixes, among others. Source: Faster and Faster through MCN.

Well that was the first one. Though not as massive as the Millyard motorcycle, the second one is a Arizona Boss Hoss Viper V10. It was posted in Kneeslider and one of the reader, Nawitus sends the link of the official source of this Arizona Boss Hoss. Apparently, these guys sale a lot of monster bikes and trikes. It’s really amazing how different the two bikes look while using the same powerplant. Visit the Arizona Boss Hoss websit to have a look at their lineup. including a 6000cc, 425 hp freaking liquid cooled V8, made from a Chevy, the 57 Chevy Trike. Sweet!
There is a new Superbike firm in the news and this is something similar ro the HD Roehr firm. Meant only for racing, very very costly as expected and what stunner to look at. A Superbike has hardly looked this good before. The stylish machine is the AV1 from Kalex Engineering. This is a limited production track weapon with space-age chassis engineering—and the Rotax V990R motor from an Aprilia RSV bored out to 1100 cc. Described by Performance Bike magazine as The best bike since the Britten, it was created by Alex Baumgärtel and Klaus Hirsekorn for trackday enthusiasts and riders in the European ‘Sound of Thunder’ race series. The AV1 is about to be joined by the Kalex Moto2, which is on a drawing board right now in Bobingen, Germany. It’s being developed for the Moto2 race category, which uses modified 150 bhp Honda CBR600RR engines and will replace the 250cc class in 2010. Source of info: BIKE EXIF and you can visit Kalex Engineering for more details. Pssst! They are also working on a customized Triumph.
And here it is. The fastest bike in the world. this is a V-Quad engine from Nelson Engineering. V-Quad sets new world record at the Bonneville Salt Flats then breaks that record too! The final record speed is now 164.172 mph. Mike Maggio rode his V-Quad bike to the new record on Wednesday 8/12/09. The V-Quad engine, basically a side by side V-Twin, that Greg Nelson produces, was installed in a custom motorcycle built by Brouhard Design for owner Mike Maggio. They took it to Bonneville recently and Maggio ran 164.172 mph for a new record in the APGU class. This is an open motorcycle (no fairings or streamlining), push rod, gas, unlimited engine size above 3,000 cc’s. This is the production V-Quad engine you can buy. Greg says they’re already working on an upgrade with plans for 180 mph in October at El Mirage. Mike Maggios twin turbo V-Quad is on the cover of Septembers issue of America Cycle magazine. Check out the V-Quad website for lots of interesting stuff and all the details of the Carl Brouhard built award winning custom and there is also a video of the bike on the Salts.

The VR6 from HOREX

Whenever we talk about German motorcycles, we only think about BMW. Well that shows the dominance of the company and also that they are the only existing worldwide German motorcycle company. If you try hard, the names of Adler, DKW, Munch, MZ and a few others will crop up. In all probably there were over 300 small and big manufacturers from Germany and about 90% of them are extinct now. Recently a firm by the name of Horex has made some news with their new roadster and something tells me that this is the start of something big. Horex will showcase their new motorcycle, the VR6 in the Colonge Intermot this week that is to be held from today (6th to 10th October). Horex is a small company from Garching but with some real big plans with their new 6 cylinder roadster.
So far, the reborn German marque has introduced only 2 complete motorcycles and it is very much in the lines of the prototypes that were showcased in Munich, Germany this June. One of them develops a very healthy 160 bhp from its naturally aspirated engine and so you can guess how much the other, that is, the supercharged version will get to! An incredible 230 bhp from a non GP non racing roadster bike! Now that is something to surely raise many an eyebrows. They would also show their new VR6 machine inside out, that is in the raw form, dissected.
The six cylinder engine encompasses 1218cc, but what is unique for the engine is the layout as evident from the pictures below. It is neither an inline nor a V, but kind of a mixture of both. It is the VR engine. The engine has a 15-degree angle between the two rows of three cylinders, which share the same cylinder block and cylinder head which work in three parallel arranged camshafts for three valves per cylinder. This makes it narrower and shorter than a regular V6. Of course the benefits are many but I presume the biggest benefit is that you can have the refinement of a 6 cylinder engine even on a smaller bike like this roadster and it doesn’t have to be a Goldwing.
All credit for the incredibly beautiful and new motorcycle needs to go to Clemens Neese and his team. Mr. Nesse is an IT guy (he completely looks the part) with not much of a background in motorcycles. But it is his passion for motorcycles and being a realist helped. He had a vision, but he didn’t have money. In 2004, when he visualized about this new project, he knew to make a mark in the fiercely competitive world, he will need an USP if his model has to stand above or even stand out. By 2005, he got his team together consisting of his close friends, Frank Fischer and Fritz Rombach and they started working from the bottom of the pyramid. The soul of the pyramid is of course the unique engine layout, referred as the "VR engine" and in 2007, patented it. VR engines follow a design principle in which the number of engines (four or more) cylinders are in two rows in a manner as mentioned above. In this VR6, each cylinder head has two intake valves and a single exhaust valve, all operated by the three parallel camshafts.
Anyway, soon he found other believers and there were financiers willing to sponsor the project. A private investor bank from Germany, KfW SME Bank and even the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology were willing to bet on its success. In 2009, he bought the rights for the brand name Horex. 6 years in the making and now we have a brand new German bike. The engine was developed with the help of the engineers from the University of Munich and with the technical assistance from Volkswagen who also make the VR, rather the VW engine. But as such, the engine was developed from the ground up and theoretically, only the basic principle of the new Horex engine is comparable to the Volkswagen. Rolls Royce is also mentioned as a partner.
We will get to the Horex brand in a short while. So is it just the name or are there similarities with the original brand? Nesse plans were to design the new bike like the original Horex machines such as the Regina or the Emperor, but of course with a modern yet retro touch. The original Horex motorcycles had clean lines, high quality and German engineering and all of these traits are there on the new Horex. Clean lines and retro styling meant no plastics or aerodynamic shields which also meant that the engine outline have to be borne from a designer point of view. And what a beauty it has turned out to be. Look at the images and you will be drawn to the engine. You will notice that there is an aluminum bridge frame that surrounds the engine and you can see the six exhaust headers flow from the engine leading to three silencers all on the same side. The VR6 engine is liquid cooled and it has a six-speed transmission with a belt drive transferring power to the rear wheel.
Front forks, as evident are upside-down with 50 mm tubes and 130 mm of spring travel. At the rear is a single-sided swingarm with damping handled by a central spring strut. The double-disc front brakes are fitted with radial four-piston calipers while the single-disc rear uses a two-piston caliper brake.

The Regina & the Imperator
A little history of the Horex Company. Horex was founded in 1923 by the Rex Glassware Company. Since it was in Hombarg, the name was fused as HoRex. Initially, Horex started out building motorcycles with Columbus four-stroke engines from Oberursel and within 2 years, both companies merged keeping the Horex brand name. These 4S engines were all single cylinder engines with cubic capacity ranging 250 to 600 cc. In the mid thirties, 2 chain driven over head cam parallel twins of 600 and 800 cc were manufactured. After WWII, Horex resumed business with a 350cc single cylinder model, the Regina (SB 35). Regina became the most successful model for horex and most of the existing Horex motorcycles are from the Regina series albeit different engine sizes. Other successful models included a 30 bhp 500 cc OHC parallel twin called the Imperator and of course the Emperor. The Regina came out in 1948 and in 1955, it was replaced by the Resident. In 1960, Daimler-Benz took over the company and motorcycle production was halted permanently. Overall all the Horex models were known for their pace as they were supposedly quite fast with high initial torque and of course the engineering too.
The new VR6 models will be priced upwards of €20,000 (about £17,400/ $27,700). The new Horex will come standard with ABS. The models would be available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland by next year, Horex plans an international release. Yes, we are all awaiting for its first ride and road tests but until then you cannot even hear the engine because Horex doesn’t plan it to even start the engine during the show but Nesse says it sounds real sweet. Fingers crossed!
Visit the official HOREX website for all theinformation as to how the design came into being, what goes inside the motor and all other details. There are also loads of desktop images of huge sizes.
